Follow Me Follow You: The Arrival of The Box

Follow Me Follow You: The Arrival of The Box

IMG_7438

It was one of those Red Letter Days over the weekend. Having very kindly sent me an advance copy of my first-ever paperback, my lovely publisher, Choc Lit, then sent The Box to my house.

This is what was inside.

IMG_7457What an incredible moment. I took out the first copy and passed it to Gajitman, with the next two copies going to our children – not that they’re old enough to read Follow Me Follow You yet – it is an adult contemporary romance after all. Their copies will remain on the bookshelf for a while. They are not too young to ask for signed copies, however, and so their wish was my command.

‘How shall I sign it?’ I asked. ‘I’m your mum. I can’t sign it L E James …’

‘Put Mum and L E James,’ my daughter said.

So I did. My first-ever paperback, with my first-ever signature: Mum. L E James. I’m not intending on doing that in all of them … 🙂

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped make my dream come true. I consider myself very lucky to be doing what I love, surrounded by the people I love, in a place that I love.

I look forward to meeting you at the book launch and author afternoon in September.

Have a great week.

Take care.

Follow Me, Follow You on the Virtual Shelves

Follow Me, Follow You on the Virtual Shelves.

FM_hirespackshot copyHuge excitement in the James household as my second novel for Choc Lit, Follow Me, Follow You hits the virtual shelves. It’s available on all major digital platforms, with the paperback to #follow early September.

There is a dedicated page here for the book.

I spent three days last week preparing for the release, including writing blogs in celebration. In the Choc Lit Corner I asked: what defines a first love?ChocLit-logo transparent background

Along with first loves, Follow Me, Follow You is about healing and recovery – not just for the characters, but for me as the writer.

I was 60,000 words into the first draft when I lost my mum two years ago, and with the wind very much knocked out of my sails, progressing the journey of Victoria Noble and Chris Frampton became a struggle. But I never gave up on them. I set them ashore and kept them safe until the storm had passed.

When the seas grew calmer, Victoria and Chris continued on their way and in September 2013, they reached their final destination.

Typing ‘Ends’ was a significant and emotional moment. I’d done it. I’d finished the story I was compelled to complete, connecting together two ends of an intricate, complicated and personal circle – one tied to my mother, the other to the last book we ever discussed.

And a piece of me healed.

As a result, I’m very attached to Victoria and Chris, little Seth and Rick, lovely Frank and direct Olivia, and I wish them a long and healthy life on the virtual shelves, in the real world.

Then come September, I’ll be standing on Chesil Beach, saluting the clear, blue skies with the paperback in my hand, acknowledging the journey we’ve all taken.

A Day to Remember. Meeting Jill Mansell.

A Day to Remember. Meeting Jill Mansell.

The 1st of July 2014.

It was what my mum would have called a Red Letter Day, and one we’d have loved to have spent together.

It was an emotional, poignant and exciting day which completed a circle in my writing life.

IMG_6973At Exeter Central Library, I met three intelligent, witty, talented authors – Sheila O’Flanagan, Veronica Henry and Jill Mansell.

My mum, who was an avid reader and booklover, introduced me to Jill Mansell’s and Sheila O’Flanagan’s books a number of years ago. It was in Jill’s Good At Games, which I read first and enjoyed so much I devoured from cover-to-cover, where I first came across the Romantic Novelists’ Association. Jill wrote so enthusiastically about the organisation, I was compelled to investigate its website. I was thrilled to discover some of my favourite authors were members, and there was a scheme for new writers. As someone who believes there’s a novel in everyone, and as a person who’s penned poems, songs, comics and plays from a young age, I’d hit gold.

I was inspired and motivated to take action.

Four months later I joined the RNA on the New Writers’ Scheme.

In 2013, my debut novel, Truth or Dare? was released and published as an eBook by Choc Lit.

In September this year, my second novel, Follow Me, Follow You will be released digitally and as a paperback. A dream come true.

The evening of chat at the library was entertaining, informative and engaging, with the three ladies sharing their experiences and knowledge about novel writing. For me as a writer, their advice was invaluable, and as a reader I cannot wait to get started on their new books.

This truly was a RLD.

I am so pleased I was finally able to thank Jill in person for the inspiration she provided and for shining the light in the right direction.

And I’m so glad my mum had an excellent taste in authors.

Take care.

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Plants vs Zombies & Purple Trainers.

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Plants vs Zombies & Purple Trainers.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week – 16th – 22nd June 2014.

I have rheumatoid arthritis – RA. I’ve had it since I was eighteen, but I was aware of its existence five years before that when my mother was diagnosed with the condition. It was a shock to learn she had this debilitating and painful disease. I remember crying and wishing I could take it away from her. If only I had it instead of Mum …

Mum Black and White Wedding

RA is considered an invisible disease because many of its symptoms cannot be seen – pain, chronic fatigue, sleeplessness, to name a few.

I can show you my hands and you’ll see scars, nobbly knuckles and fingers with an amazing ability to point round corners, but to see me from across the street, you’d struggle to identify the problem.

And, if you do see me from across the street, that means it’s a good day, and one when I am able to go out. Perhaps the weather’s warm and dry, or I’ve had a rare, but wonderful night’s sleep, or maybe it’s shortly after my weekly injection.

Look at my shoes. They’re comfortable, supportive, sensible. Okay, maybe not sensible in the strictest sense of the word, but there are no killer heels in my wardrobe. Am I wearing trousers? Jeans? Crops? probably, because I struggle to find shoes to wear with skirts and dresses. I have too many dropped or inflamed joints in my feet and my ankles are too weak to withstand fashion footwear.

IMG_6672

Dawdling is often my top speed, pulling a zip up on my coat is an achievement worth celebrating, and discovering beautiful pens I can hold takes me way beyond thrilled. Seriously. I love pens. You knew that.

For me, RA is a way of life. I’ve never been a homeowner or worker without it, I had RA years before I met and married Gajitman, and our children have grown up accepting Dad’s the parent who will roll down the hills with them, take them kayaking, or instigate a bundle in the living room. But that’s dads and children, isn’t it?

I’ve had the honour of sharing my love of reading and music with our children, the pleasure of discussing the merits of defending a virtual garden with tallnuts when the zombies attack, and the joy of cuddling up together to watch Disney’s Peter Pan fifteen times in one week.

IMG_6671

It’s probable I’d have done the same even if I’d not had rheumatoid arthritis, and if I was offered a guaranteed magic cure, I’d take it, but I am certain I’ve seen things in my life I would have passed by had I been going at full steam.

For more information about rheumatoid arthritis, please visit the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society page.

Take care.

Book Reveal: Follow Me, Follow You.

Book Reveal: Follow Me, Follow You.

I am delighted, thrilled and excited beyond belief to announce that my second novel, titled, Follow Me, Follow You, is to be published by Choc Lit in both digital and paperback formats later this year.

This will be my first book published as a paperback, and I cannot wait to hold a copy. The very talented artist and writer, Berni Stevens, designed the beautiful cover and has once more produced a perfect work of art and captured the essence of the whole novel.

I think this is a stunning cover. Thank you Berni and Choc Lit.

I feel privileged to be able to share this today, as it’s the second anniversary of the passing of my lovely mum. I started writing this book in the January of 2012, and was 60,000 words in to the first draft before Mum died, and whilst she never had the chance to read Follow Me, Follow You, she was kept abreast of the characters’ comings and goings.

As I stated before, she was a great supporter of my dream to write, and I can imagine her smile upon seeing this. She would say the cover was totally me.

Okay. She probably wouldn’t use the word ‘totally’, but she would instinctively know how much I love the colours, and the sheer pizzazz of the shooting star.

Sharing this today is fitting, and for me, completes another circle.

Take care.

If I Could Clap …

TOD_FRONT largeIf I could clap, I would express my excitement at having ‘Truth or Dare?’, published by Choc Lit, selected by Amazon as a Kindle Deal of the Month. For the rest of January, you can download ToD HERE for 99p only!

By downloading and reading ToD, for less than a pound, you will travel from Leighton Buzzard to Weymouth and Portland, take a short trip on the London underground, and spend two evenings at the theatre. And meet Declan O’Brien. He’s Irish, and in a recent survey (not mine, although I wish I’d thought of doing it), the Irish accent came out on top as the world’s sexiest.

Thoughts like that keep me from counting down the days to complete freedom for The Hand. My wrist surgery went well, but I am still in a cast, waiting for my IMG_5127ligaments to heal.  I’m not sure where my muscles went. Okay, they weren’t that big to start with, but 4 weeks in an above-elbow cast has left me with an Olive Oyl arm. I am now in a below-elbow cast,  and movement is getting better each day.  I’m working up to a pea sized bicep. Just over a week, and I should be cast-free, and into a splint. Marble muscles, here I come.

IMG_5304

It hasn’t stopped me writing, and book 3, working title, ‘What Doesn’t Kill You’, is under way. It’s set in Weymouth and Portland, and this time my hero is a Welsh coastguard. I’m looking forward to the research. I’m trying to clap. Have resorted to slapping my thigh with my good hand.

I mention book 3 and my hero coastguard as although it’s sunny in Dorset today, which is always a bonus for January, the weather has been wild, throwing all sorts of debris onto Chesil Beach. A wonderful crew of volunteers have given up their weekends to clean the long sweep of pebbles. Great work. Had I been able to help, I’d have been there, but I thank you and applaud your efforts, generosity and hard work.

And when I can clap, I shall applaud some more. You can read about the brilliant work HERE.

I hope the start of 2014 has been kind to you, and continues to be so.

Take care.

Handy New Year!

IMG_5124Handy New Year – that’s what I’ll be having, with another sixteen days in plaster. The Hand is sporting a fantastic, luminous orange, lightweight cast. I’m very attached to it. I once had welly boots the same orange – I remember splashing about in them. I digress.

I hope you had a great Christmas and are now ready for 2014. Our tree will come down on New Year’s Day, as we prepare for my son’s birthday. I like to have a marked distinction between the events. It’s the end and the beginning wrapped up in a few days.IMG_5115

I’ve spent time reflecting. 2013 has been an enormous year for us.

Shortly after the first anniversary of my mum’s death, my family and I set off to Florida, and spent an incredible three weeks visiting Disneyworld and Universal Studios. This is a holiday I will never forget. It was special. It was healing. It was magical.IMG_2592

The RNA Quiz

A glorious week was spent in Italy, at Arte Umbria, with Celia Anderson, on a course led by Sue Moorcroft, followed by a fab weekend in Sheffield with my lovely Romantic Novelists’ Association and Romaniac friends at the annual RNA conference.

I saw Paloma Faith live twice, introducing my daughter to the live gig experience. Jessie J was the next concert my daughter attended, escorted by Gajitman, as I was away at the Festival of Romance.

I received a new ulna joint.

Christmas dinner was cooked by my husband and daughter, and my son ensured our energy levels were high. I was thoroughly spoiled.

IMG_5169

IMG_5142Well, that was my year, and supporting me all the way through with unconditional love was my small, but perfectly formed family, and my wonderful friends. Thank you so much.

And thank you to everyone who bought, read, and reviewed Truth or Dare?

I hope 2013 was kind to you, and I wish you all health, wealth and happiness for 2014.

Take care.

Naked Hand

IMG_4979

Naked. That’s how my left hand feels tonight, as it prepares for tomorrow’s surgery. It feels odd to not wear my rings, but I had to take them off when the opportunity arose – when my hands were at their coldest.

Tomorrow, assuming all goes to plan, my left arm will be wrapped snugly in a back-slab and bandages, following surgery to prevent further damage to my tendons.

TOD_FRONT largeI am a little obsessed with hands. Declan, my main man in ‘Truth or Dare?’ has safe hands, and it’s one of the first things the heroine, Kate, notices. She’s of the opinion one can tell a lot about a person from studying their hands.

I’m not letting her near mine.

While I still have both hands free to type, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your wonderful support this year. 2013 saw my debut novel published, which was a dream come true. Receiving 5* reviews and being nominated for an award has taken me beyond those dreams.IMG_4980

I wish you a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

My naked hand and I are off to bed – we have an early start.

Take care.

Party Season

IMG_4864

The party season is in full bloom, with the Festival of Romance, and the Romantic Novelists’ Association Winter Party paving the way. Both are great events, with opportunities to meet readers, writers, book bloggers, editors, agents – all sorts of industry professionals.

5 Romaniacs

I met my publishers, Choc Lit, at the inaugural Festival of Romance, in 2011, not to mention the ladies who went on to become The Romaniacs.

The RNA parties provide the opportunity to meet with writing friends, and catch up with the latest news. It’s a great party.

I love these events, and if you are able to attend, I recommend doing so.

On the most recent trip to London for the RNA party, I had a few hours spare, so I took a trip to Harrods, something I haven’t done in years. The Christmas decorations are still on the third floor …

It was a fab couple of days away, but as always, I was pleased to be home with my lovely family, share with them my exploits, and show them the photos I’ve taken.

It took me a week to recover.

My next ‘big thing’ is a wrist operation, a week before Christmas, so I’m trying to get everything wrapped up before then. Excuse the pun.

Have a great weekend, and take care.

Weymouth and Writing on Publication Day

The Smugglers Inn, Osmington Mills, Weymouth, where Gaitman and I had our wedding reception. Declan and Kate spend the night here.
The Smugglers Inn, where Gajitman and I had our wedding reception.
Declan and Kate spend the night here.

Weymouth and writing go together like fish and chips, the sea and sand, and Portland Bill and the red and white lighthouse. I love using scenery from my home town, and Chesil Beach features in both Truth or Dare? and Follow Me, but leading up to the release this week of my debut, Truth or Dare?, I would like to share with you an insight into my life, in fact and fiction.

Truth or Dare? begins in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, where I bought my first house. In the late eighties and early nineties, it was a small market town, a fifteen minute drive from the big shops in Central Milton Keynes. I moved there from Watford, primarily because property was cheaper, but also for my job. I was an insurance claims assessor, and Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire were part of my area.

Weymouth Harbour
Weymouth Harbour. I love sitting here on a sunny day, with my family, eating fish and chips, watching the world sail by.

My parents lived in Weymouth, and I visited whenever work, social life, and Rotaract permitted, rising early so during my drive I would see the sun drift over Salisbury Cathedral, and arrive in Weymouth in time to watch the dedicated dog-walkers set their hounds free on the beach. I would reach my parents’ house ready to sit at the family table for breakfast. Sometimes I told my mum I was coming, other times, I’d just pitch up.

I’ve lived in Weymouth for twenty years, on three separate occasions, this latest spell being the longest. I cannot imagine leaving. It holds many precious memories – marriage, births, deaths, friendships.

Chesil Beach
Chesil Beach. Rosie and Josh have a ‘moment’ here.

I love the scenery, the drama, the cry of the gulls. The sea.

It is no wonder Weymouth and Portland feature in my novels. I hope I can do it justice.

Beautiful and inspirational

And I hope you enjoy reading Truth or Dare? It’s published today, and is available on Kindle.

Love’s a dangerous game …

Kate Blair’s sick of unrequited love. She’s quietly waited for Mickey for the past six years and finding a compass-carved heart, with their initials scratched through the middle, only strengthens her resolve: no more Mickey and no more playing it safe.

It’s time to take a chance on real love and Declan O’Brien’s the perfect risk. He’s handsome, kind, and crazy about her so it’s not long before all thoughts of Mickey come few and far between.

But old habits die-hard. Kate may have started to forget … but has Mickey?
